The environmental characteristics of offshore platforms include high humidity, salt fog, and extreme dampness, the greatest risk is the tendency to slip, generally, high-top boots are more suitable.
The upper part of the shoes is made of waterproof and salt-fog-resistant leather. the front part can be made of steel or composite materials, and the midsole uses puncture-resistant Kevlar material.
The primary requirements are anti-slip performance, waterproof performance and corrosion resistance. now, let's analyze it in detail.
Offshore platforms (including oil drilling platforms, FPSO floating production storage vessels, and offshore wind power platforms - some of which have similar requirements) have the following environmental characteristics:
Long-term dampness, daily exposure to seawater/rainwater/sea fog/high humidity, makes shoes prone to getting wet, getting moldy and causing the shoe uppers to age.
2. In a steel deck environment, the platform floor is made of steel grating, steel ladders, and metal decks. the most likely accident in such an environment is not being injured by heavy objects, but falling due to slipping. especially, oil + water + steel plates = extremely high risk of slipping.
3. Salt spray corrosion occurs in marine environments where the salt content is extremely high, which can easily corrode metal eyelets, steel toe caps, and steel midsoles.
4. Explosion-proof environment. In areas where petroleum and natural gas are present, t
here are flammable gases and crude oil vapors. Therefore, anti-static measures are also extremely important.
The offshore platform is not a "higher-grade oilfield shoe", but rather a safety shoe specially designed for the marine environment.

Requirements for the safety shoe upper :
1. Waterproof full-grain leather (Water Resistant Full Grain Leather), recommend using Full Grain Leather or Hydrophobic Treatment. the thickness is 1.8 - 2.2mm. the purpose is to solve caused by seawater immersion, rain, and salt fog ,it requires Water Resistant (WR) property.
Why not regular leather? regular cowhide will become hard, crack and mold when it absorbs water. the shoes worn on offshore platforms come into contact with damp environments every day.
2. The upper part of the shoe is treated for corrosion resistance. A special requirement is "Salt Water Resistant", with the aim of reducing salt fog corrosion and leather aging.
3. For the shoe eyelets and metal parts, we recommend using rust-resistant metal eyelets and stainless steel accessories. this is because ordinary iron parts may rust after being exposed to the seaside for several months.
II. Requirements for the Toe Cap :
The offshore platform still needs to be protected against impact. however, the priority is lower than that for drilling. composite Toe is recommended and is becoming increasingly popular.
The reasons are the humidity on the sea, temperature variations, and the advantages of composite materials: ✅ No rust ✅ Light weight ✅ Good insulation property.
Of course, Steel Toe is also acceptable. the standard is the European EN ISO 20345, and the recommended grade is S3, which includes a 200J impact and 15kN pressure.
III. Requirements for the Midsole :
Bulletproof protection remains crucial. there are numerous screws, metal fragments, and tool parts on the surface of offshore platforms. it is recommended to use Kevlar Anti-Puncture Plate, with a standard EN ISO 20345 P grade of ≥1100N.
However, the requirements are slightly lower than those for drilling platforms. the reason is that drilling involves a large amount of drilling equipment and steel. and more risks at sea come from the slippery conditions.
IV. Shoe Bottom (Outsole) - The core component of the offshore platform, this is the main difference between Offshore Safety Boots and other oilfield shoes.
1. Superior anti-slip SRC, this is the top priority. It must be SRC Anti Slip, and even many companies require Slip Resistant Offshore Sole. the reason is that the platform steel deck + seawater + crude oil. slipping could lead to a direct fall into the sea.
2. Oil-resistant FO is necessary. The reason is that there is a lot of crude oil, hydraulic oil and lubricating oil on the platform. Standard: EN ISO 20345 FO .
3. Heat protection HRO (for certain positions), in environments close to the engine and heat pipes, HRO is also required, capable of withstanding 300℃ contact heat.
4. Recommend shoe sole materials, the first choice is Rubber Outsole, especially Nitrile Rubber. Its advantages include the best anti-slip property, oil resistance and wear resistance.
PU/Rubber dual-density sole, the advantage is its lightness. It is suitable for long-term inspection.
V. Lining Requirements :
The offshore platform operates for long periods, typically 8-12 hours. the key requirement is rapid moisture removal. the material to be considered is Moisture Wicking Mesh (such as Cambrelle), which is designed to reduce foot sweat, blisters, and odors.
It is not recommended to use thick cotton. Why? The humidity on the sea is high. Thick cotton absorbs moisture and dries slowly.
VI. Anti-static Requirements (Extremely Important) :
Offshore oil fields are usually given more attention than ordinary oil fields. the reason is that the natural gas environment is prone to the risk of static electricity sparks. Antistatic, Standard: EN ISO 20345: A, Resistance: 100kΩ - 1000MΩ .
