The requirements for safety shoes in petrochemical plants and refineries have many similarities, but they are not exactly the same.
Both belong to the Oil & Gas / Chemical Industry, so the basic protective functions such as anti-static, anti-oil, anti-slip, anti-puncture, and anti-penetration (for some positions) are similar.
However, the production environments and hazard sources of the two are different, so the design focus of safety shoes will be different.
Petroleum refineries will encounter more situations involving chemical reactions, chemical raw materials, corrosive media and solvents.
Therefore, petrochemical plants usually pay more attention to "chemical protection" than oil refineries do.
A petrochemical plant mainly produces petroleum-based chemicals.
For example, ethylene, polypropylene, ABS, chemical resins, etc.
Typical areas include reaction vessels, chemical reaction zones, storage tank areas, and chemical transportation zones. these areas have risks of chemical corrosion from acidic and alkaline solvents, as well as risks of chemical liquid splashing caused by pipeline leaks and improper valve operation.
Therefore, the key points of safety shoes for petrochemical plants are: Chemical-resistant + Anti-static + Anti-slip + Easy to clean .

I . Requirements for the safety shoe upper :
We recommend using Microfiber Leather or Coated Leather. the reason is that the microfiber material has a low liquid absorption rate, is easy to clean, and has good chemical stability.
For instance, if exposed to toluene, acetone, or acidic and alkaline liquids, ordinary cowhide may absorb the liquids, while microfiber leather is easier to maintain.
II. Requirements for the Toe Cap :
It must be impact-resistant, Choose Steel Toe or Composite Toe, Standard: EN ISO 20345 - 200J impact.
The petrochemical plant might prefer Composite Toe because of its light weight, non-conductive property and corrosion resistance.
III. Requirements for the Midsole :
Chemical plant maintenance requires Kevlar Anti-Puncture, preference is given to S3 because there is a risk of metal fragments and tool drops during equipment maintenance.
IV. Shoe Outsole Requirement :
The shoe soles of petrochemical plants are not only resistant to oil, but also feature Chemical Resistant Outsole. This is because they may come into contact with acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. it is recommended to use Nitrile Rubber or PVC Rubber or special chemical-resistant rubber.
V. Lining Requirements :
The inner part requires Mesh Lining. it should be breathable and absorb sweat. it is not recommended to make the lining too thick, as in a chemical environment, the interior of the shoes becomes damp and is more prone to developing odors.
Overall, the recommended protection level is :
General production staff : EN ISO 20345 - S2 SRC FO A or S3 SRC FO .
Chemical maintenance personnel recommendation : S3 SRC FO HRO , If there is a chemical risk, increase the "Chemical Resistant" protection.
The core features of the petrochemical plant: Chemical Resistance + Anti-static + Slip Resistance+
oil resistance . Both S2 and S3 protection levels can basically cover these requirements.

From the actual usage and procurement situation in the global petrochemical industry, low-top safety shoes are the mainstream, while high-top safety boots are mainly used for specific positions , the working methods of petrochemical plants determine the shoe styles.
Many typical positions such as operators , field inspectors , instrument technicians, electrical technicians, DCS operators, process engineers, etc., have the following daily working characteristics: a lot of walking (8-15 km/day is not uncommon), climbing stairs, going up and down scaffolds, inspecting on steel grating platforms, and standing for long periods.
Therefore, more emphasis is placed on lightweight, flexibility, breathability, and long-term comfort. as a result, many people prefer to search for Low Cut Safety Shoes / Safety Sneakers / Athletic Safety Shoes rather than heavy, high-top boots.
High-top safety boots are mainly used in high-risk job positions.
For example, mechanical maintenance, turnaround/shutdown operations, and new project construction, etc.
